Basketball Drills

This drill is more about allowing a player to practice dribbling. Set up cones in a zig zag pattern to allow a player to dribble back and forth. Once the dribbler reaches the top of the key the player should pass to a waiting player and then sprint towards the hoop. As the player reaches the hoop the pass should be waiting for him for a layup.

This is a great drill to for movement. Three players line up on the wings with two defensive players lined up on the center offensive player. The back defensive player shifts between the two outer players while the front defensive player shifts between guarding the center offensive player and defending the middle. As soon as the ball is further than one player away the defensive players should then guard the closest player to them.

Have one defensive player lines up with the outside offensive player. While the ball is being passed around the wings the defensive player shuffles to keep between the ball and the hoop. When the ball arrives to the last offensive player that offensive player should dribble in for the layup. The defensive player should close out the baseline and take the charge.

After the defensive player becomes the the first offensive player and the last offensive player now becomes the defensive player.

This is one of the simplest but most important drills for players to practice. Offensive players should line up two steps in front of the defensive players. The offensive player dribbles towards the basket and attempts a layup. The defensive player follows and attempts to block the ball against the backboard with the hand furthest from the offensive player.

Both the offensive and defensive players line up between the lane lines and three point arc. The offensive player dribbles the ball within the area to an area she feels comfortable passing to the coach waiting at the top of the key. The offensive player cannot go outside the lane line or the three point arc. The defensive player should attempt to steal the ball the entire time.
After the coach receives the ball the offensive player jumps outside the three point line and tries to receive the pass back from the coach with the defensive player trying to break up the pass.
